Perhaps no other destination evokes so many different responses like Lansdowne does. Travelling to any hilly place always has its own charm. Lansdowne is one of the quietest and unspoilt hill stations of India. It is well connected with motorable roads but remote in its own way. In today’s world of utter chaos, pollution, traffic in the metro cities, I wanted a quiet, clean, pure place for a vacation. That was precisely the reason why I chose this place in the first place.
As we started the journey of Lansdowne, the change in the air was very evident so much so that the air over there was the most purest and refreshing atmosphere that I had ever come across. The salubrious weather and the pristine environment left an immortal impact in my heart. My father being a proud member of Indian Air Force, arranged for our stay at the Cantonment area, Garhwal Rifles. The beauty of the area and the well maintained and constructed Officer’s Mess took my eyes to take a glimpse of definitely the most beautiful sight in the world.
As I settled in my room and stepped out of it, I saw the most beautiful view of the hills covered by the clouds, the enchanting voice of the birds, the seamless sky beaming the last rays before the sunset and the most peaceful surrounding. It was definitely a remarkable and the most soothing sight for my eye. I ran out with my speaker, sat on a rock facing the mountains and the mesmerizing view. As the soft and tender leaves began to fall on me and the lightest instrumental music began to start, my pen touched its mate (my diary) and began to carve my thoughts with rhyme and the touch of peace that I gathered from the place.
The recent Delhi Poetry Circle heard a little glimpse of it, as it penned down-
“The vivacity of nature is for everyone to see,
Looking at the scenic views
You feel so tranquil and glee
The high mountains
And the captivating sky
Staring at it and taking a sigh,
Why is the nature so beautiful?”
After a good time sitting over there, I decided to go for a walk to explore the lush greenery of that place. The salubrious and serene climate of Lansdowne surrounded by undulating verdant hills makes it an ideal place to go for long walks amidst the lush greenery. When I close my eyes, I can still trace down the beauty of that scenic place and the happiness that came from within me. The birds chirping, the drizzle from the sky and the clouds covering half the place was something I had never seen. The smell of the rain and the tiny little raindrops touching my face made me realize what the real bliss of nature is.
The walk ended and I soon realized that it had started getting dark. When I came out of my room to hit the dining hall at the mess, I witnessed the most quiet and peaceful path. No, it wasn’t scary. Rather it was something which we people living in big flamboyant cities don’t get to witness. It was a small road leading up the hill to where The Garhwal Regiment had put up its base. A road so calm and peaceful that I could hear the slightest move of the insects or the birds. Sometimes, the voice of such creatures itself is called the natures call. The way everything is so bound with nature and how it all has been put up by the almighty.
The next day, I woke up with the utmost excitement of watching the sunrise. One of the most beautiful thing is to watch the dawn break in the forest, amidst the trees and mountains. As I walked outside my room, I saw the sky turning orange-ish yellow (sorry if that’s not a color), I just wished the time to stop and the sky to stay still. But God has its own plans. The sun tore apart the sky with its color and made the sky shine bright. As it started to rise to come up to its perfect place, I smiled. Smiled, just to capture the most amazing thing that I saw. After that, it was time for me to bid a goodbye to that place. Yes, it was just a day’s trip, only to witness one of the greatest creation of God. I bid it adieu with most beautiful smile because I gave me an opportunity to witness something for which my eyes longed for. Sincere thanks to the Regiment that gave us such a homely and comfortable stay. One thing I realized at the end was-
“Time spent in nature is the time spent realizing that you don’t know it all and you probably never will.”
